10 harmful chemicals in cosmetics

  1. Paraben: Preservative, linked to breast cancer, found in three common forms (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben).
  2. Sulfate: Found in toothpaste and foaming cleansers, with two common types – sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). Removes moisture, breaks down protective barriers, and can cause skin irritation.
  3. Phthalate: Lubricant and softening agent found in nail polish, moisturizers, shampoos, hair sprays, toys, detergents, causing endocrine disruption, breast cancer, birth defects, and hormonal impacts.
  4. Formaldehyde: Colorless gas used widely as a preservative in skincare and cosmetics (nail polish, makeup, perfumes, deodorants). Short-term exposure can cause skin irritation, difficulty breathing, eye irritation, and nasal discharge. Classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
  5. Phenoxy Ethanol: Bactericide in cosmetics and stabilizer in perfumes, harmful when ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Particularly dangerous for breastfeeding women and infants, impacting the central nervous system and causing skin and eye irritation.
  6. Alcohol: Found in perfumes, hair care gels, hair spray (hair spray glue…), foaming products, acne treatment, dandruff treatment, hair loss treatment, deodorant products. Causes dry and irritated skin, inflammation due to damaging the protective skin barrier, and increases the risk of bacterial invasion leading to severe inflammation. Harmful alcohol types include methanol, isopropyl, propanol, benzyl.
  7. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Skin softener or emulsifying agent. Can cause irritation and systemic toxicity when applied to damaged skin, reduces skin moisture, and accelerates aging.
  8. Propylene Glycol (PG): Found in lipsticks, shampoos, and more. Derived from petroleum, it clings to the skin’s surface after washing, causing dryness and requiring moisturizer. Acts as a penetration enhancer; use it before applying serum or moisturizer to enhance absorption. This type can cause irritation.
  9. Butylene Glycol: Derived from petroleum, a preservative, solvent, and moisturizing agent. Found in mascara, concealer, sunscreen, hair spray glue. Side effects include depression, drowsiness, skin irritation, dermatitis, and hives.
  10. Synthetic Fragrances: A mixture of natural and synthetic ingredients used in 50% of beauty products, especially perfumes. Synthetic fragrances may contain undisclosed harmful chemicals that can be damaging to the skin, health, and potentially lead to cancer.
