Organic cosmetics, also known as organic beauty products, are cosmetics that primarily contain natural organic ingredients derived from plants, with little or no chemical content. These products aim to provide safe beauty enhancement with minimal to no adverse effects.
Keeping up with the global trend, Organic Cosmetics (OC) has rapidly gained popularity among consumers in Vietnam. However, in today’s market, there are thousands of brands advertising their products as organic. So, how can consumers distinguish between them?
How to identify Organic Cosmetics
Over 80% of the ingredients in skincare products and 93% of hair care products today are made from components in the “blacklist.”
Most companies producing OC or natural products often add a very small amount of herbal extracts to a mix of chemical formula ingredients: synthetic polymers, silicones, petroleum (and its derivatives), synthetic fragrances, colors, and other harmful chemicals. They then highlight a few “green” ingredients as the main components of the product
Natural Cosmetics: Not mandatory to disclose the percentage of ingredients, so as long as there is one naturally sourced component (sometimes less than 1%) in the ingredients, the label “Natural” can be printed on the packaging. However, even natural products may still contain chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances
Organic Cosmetics has four levels: 100% organic, more than 95% organic, more than 70% organic (made with organic ingredients), and less than 70% (some organic ingredients). Only the first two categories carry the USDA Organic Seal
Additionally, herbal ingredients (raw materials for product production) are only recognized as organic when:
- Grown on pesticide-free soil
- No chemical fertilizers are used
- Does not contain preservatives from mineral oil or petroleum
- Does not contain artificial colorings, flavorings, etc.
Things to Note When Using Organic Cosmetics
- Organic cosmetics are highly safe, suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Children from the age of 14 should start paying attention to body care and beauty products, prioritizing gentle natural products that are both safe and effective
- Drawback: Results may not be immediate as these products are mainly composed of herbal extracts, including preservatives and fragrances derived from natural herbs. It may take some weeks or months to see results
- When transitioning from regular cosmetics to organic ones, users may experience a greasy feeling, discomfort, or a less pronounced fragrance. This is because organic cosmetics primarily use essential oils and natural extracts, resulting in a different texture and appearance. However, the nutrients and vitamins will deeply nourish the skin, providing genuine results
- Organic skincare may not meet the demand for skin whitening as they lack exfoliating agents and do not contain skin-corroding substances. They focus on cleaning, stimulating cell regeneration, and increasing collagen production for brighter and healthier skin, creating a protective barrier against external harmful factors
- In conclusion, these drawbacks will no longer be significant issues with a bit of patience. With perseverance, your skin will be properly cared for and maintain long-term skin health
